So, my month of June saw me take an aggressive stand and try harder to make money via my blog than ever before and you know what--I did.  For the month of may I made aproximately $40 via Text Link Ads and Google AdSense.  For the month of June I utilized BuzzFuse and attempted to make money via their blog post incentive system and I was scoring fairly well and actually had the highest rated post for the month of June (which meant $500 according to their system) only to receive this shocking letter from BuzzFuse:
BuzzFuse
Dear Joe,

I'm sorry to have to inform you that we've had difficulties with our major investor in Buzzfuse (solely because he has had difficulties with his bankers), and as a result Buzzfuse is immediately technically insolvent.

After 24 months of building Buzzfuse, and watching subscribers grow 11x in the last six record months alone, you can imagine how this feels...

What this means:
- We are scrambling to stay alive in some form. What we are trying to do is keep Buzzfuse alive as a free service and find alternate investors/partners.
- However, we have no cash and have cut back on ALL costs.
- Our team remain committed to the project and will work after hours and weekends (they are seeking employment elsewhere). So we'll keep fixing those bugs if you keep finding them :)

As a premium subscriber, this means that:
(a) We will not be in a position to pay the creator rewards for the same months. Our bank accounts are literally several 100K negative.
(b) We will refund you for any subscriptions received in the period April-July 2008, so at the very least these last few months will not have cost anything. This will be done in the next few days, including changes to the home page etc.
(c) We will attempt to resurrect the premium service should we find another investor/partner in future.

In the meantime, we'd like to thank you for your support and to ask that you keep using the normal service (and finding those bugs).

Yours sincerely,

g (and the Buzzfuse team)

...WTFudge?  So, basically, I used a month worth of my time and energy to give this company props and all I get out of it is a refund?  Here is my theory: Joeprah's awesomeness broke their system.  When BuzzFuse was constructed they never thought about, oh, well...me owning it.  This total lack of planning on their part obviously shook their company to its foundation.  I feel more than a little scammed by them and their claims especially since one of the owners of the company was submitting posts and one of the top earners overall (conflict of interest?--see hell yeah).  I apologize, on behalf of BuzzFuse's complete and total horridness, to anyone who rated or commented any of my posts at BuzzFuse because it was apparently for nothing.

But Joeprah, you said you made more money this month with your blog--tell me how.

First, AdSense: $11.55 (not too shabby--getting close to a paycheck)

Second, Text Link Ads: $38.54 (eh...)

Third, TheExaminer : $55.00 (hmm...)

Fourth, Graco for my video services: $700.00 (yeah baby!)

So, even without the windfall from BuzzFuse I made $805.09 for the month of June!  I mean, I suppose if you measure that against the amount of time I lost to BuzzFuse I should, by all rights, be pissed, but I'll take it.  The Graco thing is a one time thing and it was actually a stipend or per-diem, but it still came from the blog so I am counting it.  Overall July will be slower, but we'll see what the final tally is.

Word.

Rock on! Sorry about the buzzfuse thing... not every startup can blast to the stratosphere. Their story is probably more the rule than the exception. I can imagine it's hard to get things like that going. You tried. As for me... well, I made diddly squat. Or maybe bupkus. But I'm a stealth blogger, so that's to be expected.

Good job on what you got. I'd be pretty upset with BuzzFuse too though. I'd ask them why they let the incentive program continue with bank accounts of "several 100K negative." (And if that's true then their banks can't be too smart either.) I wonder how many previous "winners" have gotten the same letter? And why does their home page still say "Earn Real Cash!" and "$5000 up for grabs this month." Somebody has to call them on this. Ask them where their main office is so you know which jurisdiction to file their involuntary bankruptcy papers in.

Like Darren says above, they still haven't announced it to the public. From their home page:

"July 2008 Earnings Pool
$3500.00
Will be split amongst the top 100 buzzing items."

WTF? And what is "immediately technically" supposed to mean?

L-A-M-E. They couldn't even sign the e-mail with a real name. You should be pissed. Congrats on your other earnings though.

Well now I can gladly say that I never once went to Buzzfuse to comment or rate you, not because I don't like what you write about but mainly because I'm lazy. :grin

Hopefully you won't shut down TLA! Highly unlikely though since they are part of Media Whiz.

And you can bet that the Graco gig will open up doors for more gigs BECAUSE of your blog.

Nice work, Joeps! ;)

That sounds scamtastic to me. I'd report them to whoever you can report them to...

Congrats on the rest though. Almost enough to buy hot wife two really expensive spa weekends.

Congrats on the Graco thing. It DOES count. You can make money from your blog and you can make money BECAUSE of your blog. It all counts.

AdSense and dad blogs just don't seem to convert. My wife and I both run parenting blogs and a personal blog. My blog is the runaway winner in earnings between the three, but after 9 months, I'm a long way from a paycheck.

I think the best way to go as a dad blogger is to go with cost-per-impression ads and pimp those page views. The best dad blogs get a lot of eyeballs, but not a lot of clicks. Now I need to figure out how to get AdSense to serve up CPM ads only.

sorry joe,
that's rots. feels like you were tricked, led on. hope it was really honest what happened. but if they saw anything looking likely to fall apart, i hope they said something to you guys as soon as they knew (or close to when they knew).

and that is funny how you said your awesomeness broke it. that's it. that must be it.

g'night, kathleen :)
