Wendy PortilloIf you are following the story of Alex Barton, the kindergarten student who was voted out of his class survivor-style , you may be interested to know that his teacher has been officially reassigned.  Big whoop, right?  Morningside Elementary teacher Wendy Portillo has been reassigned outside the classroom and further action may be forthcoming, according to St. Lucie County School District spokesperson Janice Karst.  One can only assume that with all the public outcry for Ms. Portillo’s termination, the school board may have little other option than to excuse her at this point.

Let’s examine this for a minute.  What exactly does it mean to be reassigned outside the classroom?  Is this like stuffing envelopes?  So, unless the school needs to pay someone a teacher’s salary to do light office work, are they wasting money?  What could the school board be waiting for here?  Suspend her without pay until the axe is dropped, right?  Can justice be found with such a circus frenzy surrounding the case?

The story has exploded in the media with countless bloggers and media outlets editorializing the event (ahem).  This has been the lone positive of this story so far--Aspberger’s Syndrome awareness.  Entire online communities are rallying together to aid the cause of young Alex, and strangers across the world have sent letters of encouragement to the Barton family.  Online petitions have been signed to send the message to terminate Ms. Portillo.  To say the story is viral is an understatement.  I think the firestorm will only settle when Ms. Portillo’s license has been revoked and parents, not only in Florida but across the country, can finally exhale knowing one more unfit teacher has been removed from circulation.  “She has no business being near children at all.”  That’s what Melissa Barton thinks, and I for one agree.  What do you think?  Have we too quickly condemned Wendy Portillo?  Has the St. Lucie School District acted too slowly?  Are we sick of this story and consider her firing a foregone conclusion?

In all seriousness, (hard for me except when it comes to religion), I would think an investigation is in order. Having said that, I think where there is smoke there is fire. She don’t even have to come close as far as I’m concerned and I’d bounce her down the front steps on her keister. BUT, she might belong to a union and they would jump in and make a big mess. So, separation is the middle ground and quietly she stuffs envelopes until she can’t take it anymore, wants to find a new career because no one in their right mind would hire her somewhere else or she might get caught up in a round of downsizing or then the faculty will vote her off the staff survivor style by ignoring her (essentially cutting her from the herd). Either way, to prevent Al Sharpton to show up at your front door, send her to Fairbanks, AK in January with full pay.

See, yet another reason I homeschool, psycho teachers who do such things as this. Nothing will repair the damage she has done to this little boy, he will hold this in his mind forever. You didn't have tarred and feathered as an option so I went for termination.

I absolutely think the teacher should be fired and possibly face criminal charges.

Apparently it's pretty hard to fire teachers though, which is why the "rubber room" was created. See http://www.thislife.org/ Radio_Episode.aspx?sched=1232, act 1.

Every one deserves an official investigation as long as she's not in the classroom. No teacher should be reinstated that has shown such gross misjudgment. That doesn't improve. It's who she is and how she feels as a person. She's unfit and should be terminated after an investigation. So glad to hear that it's raising awareness if only for a little while. I don't think teachers in general have a clue about Aspergers. I didn't until this year and my son's 12!

Quick note, it's Asperger's, not Aspbergers. Sorry to be a stickler. (Not that I have room to talk because the first time someone said the word to me in relation to my son I said "Ass burgers!? What's that?")

I won't lie. As the parent of an Aspie I think this woman should be fired, given a swift kick in the rear and never allowed around children again.

This is certainly a tough one because of the way the media is intentionally coloring their stories. Just reading through the article from your link, you can obviously see which stance they have chosen to take...impartial they are not.

I will probably get lambasted for saying this, but I don't think what this woman did is necessarily wrong. Not without looking further. Responding to the underlying attempt of the newspapers to try to tug at our heartstrings to increase traffic is a knee jerk reaction.

I have been reading here for a while, and almost all of us have kids. And I am almost certain that all of us have either been in, or will be in, situations where our own child has developed what I would call...ahem...an "attitude" with us. Miraculously, they will behave in the presence of someone else, if only for a short while. Lets pretend for a second that this boy was NOT suffering from Aspergers. Perhaps its NOT a bad idea to have him hear what his peers think of his behavior. Perhaps being disciplined by only his teacher has created a power struggle, and he is unaware that he may be upsetting someone else. My mother was a teacher for a long time. These people work hard. And most of them truly care about the education of our children. A disruptive child prevents or prohibits learning by other children who sincerely make an attempt to absorb the information by continuously taking their focus off others. On top of that, our glorious legal system makes it next to impossible for them to properly discipline disorderly kids (remember the paddle? It worked, didn't it?)

I have not yet found any information on this that talks about if and how the teacher tried to control this disciplinary action. Did she reprimand children who were harsh in their criticism of this kid? Don't know...all we hear is that they called him disgusting because it gets us all worked up, and thats what sells papers, right? Suppose right after that she said "Johnny! That is NOT what this is about, and we don't call people disgusting. Apologize right now!" We would never hear about that.

That being said, when you add his disorder into the mix, it does obviously change things substantially. I feel that, in order to make an educated decision on this matter you have to answer two questions:

Was the teacher, and the school, completely aware of his condition, its symptoms and the best way to approach them?

Asperger's aside, is this form of disciplinary action acceptable in an environment where its becoming increasingly difficult for teachers to handle unruly children? If not, then what are they to do that will work?

Just throwing it out there...don't hate.

I certainly hope they get that poor little one into some therapy ASAP. How horribly heartbreaking. I can't even possibly think about the way they made that little boy feel. :(

I read about this the other day. It's messed up. She should be fired. PERIOD. No reassignment.
