Being exclusive for the sake of being exclusive is wrong in all its forms.  It's strange looking at life from the side of the fence I am on, on one hand I am this average guy who has a great family and a terrific group of friends that are always there through the good and the bad.  On the other hand I am a stay at home parent that really doesn't fit the mold of the "stay at home parent" that is very gender specific.  Although I have had my growing pains in the latter, I have come through it all as a wiser person and parent.  I have some very close mDrunken Tiggerom friends and I think that for the most part they regard me as an equal.  Apparently though, I was mistaken--at least in one instance.  I recently received an email to a joint email account that my wife and I share and it was from a stay at home mom friend.  She emailed me to let me know that she was starting a "wine club" that would meet monthly and she wanted me to pass the invite on to my wife.  I asked if I could participate as my wife isn't much of a drinker and that she wouldn't get much out of the group (actually I would rather go as a couple, we do everything together).  I was told that it was a girl thing and the reason the group was being formed was to allow ladies to have a night away from the family (all husbands need not apply) with the backdrop of wine and wine tasting.   First, approaching my wife about a wine club in my presence and saying no guys allowed is the equivalent of Roo asking Tigger to join a "honey appreciation group for bouncers only" in front of Winnie The Pooh.  I am into wine more than just a little.  I read books, magazines, and websites.  I study winemaking techniques, growing regions, and varietal characteristics.  I am a wine nerd.  I have developed wine tasting/scoring sheets for wine stores I have worked for.

Here, have one on the house:

I am known for being a 'go to' wine guy.   Anyways, I know that ladies are often excluded from all male gatherings, "boys club meetings", things like poker, golf, and fantasy football leagues, but in my household we do not exclude women from any of those such groups.  Our poker nights have many ladies playing, and if any women want to play golf with me I am all for it.  I actually keep trying to get my wife to golf with me, but no dice.  Like I said before, I enjoy doing things with my wife more than anyone else and that just carries over to basically all activities I partake in.  I don’t know what this rant is about exactly, but I just find my life to be an exercise in irony.  I have three daughters and I am surrounded by women either through playgroups, playgrounds or school functions.  And now, these same women, who I am friends with, say I can't be in the wine club?  WTF!  All of sudden did I stop being cool?  Was I ever cool in the first place?  Why not let a dude in the wine tasting group?  Are they afraid that I will bring too much knowledge to the plate (Likely)?  I love my ladies, but I feel I am being dissed.  I mean, what could these ladies talk about during a wine tasting group that they don't say during playgroups?  If any of my lady friends read this, pass the word, I want in!  You know I am the wine ownage so recognize.

A recap:

  • I was emailed about a wine club
  • I want to be in said wine club
  • I am way into wine
  • It only allows for women members
  • I am a Man
  • I am the Man
  • I am fighting the power
  • The Wine Club is Sexist
  • I am still the Man
  • I was told I can not be in the club
  • I have taken to the public forum of my blog to draw attention to my considerable plight
  • I will win, even if I can not be in their club
  • I can make my own club, and it will be the bomb diggity
  • My club will allow for both men and women
  • My club will utilize my awesome custom wine scoring sheets
  • I am still the Man

I am breaking down barriers and stereotypes here.  Fear me.

There is a world of difference between Wine and Wine Spritzers, my friend. Make sure you read the fine print on the group's charter. Some people like to think they are into wine and then they offer you a White Zin (which is bubble Kool-Aide) or something with the word "Hard" in the title. There is no shame in in a nice chilled Newcastle...who comes with 5 friends to make your own group. See,vacation clears my head.

My comment refers to the line "what can they talk about that they don't in playgroup, etc.".... the answer dear Joe, is you. *grin* Not you specifically perhaps, but husbands or men in general, and you are both. Either they don't quite trust you not to carry tales or they know that you will not be joining the conversation to bash your wonderful wife.

I'll join your club. Call it "The Pinkie Pointers", you have to point your pinkie out while drinking. 'Course, it'll be hard not to spill with our noses so high in the air. Let me know, if it's in a bag, I'll drink it.

Keep fighting the power! From a fellow SAHD.

Hey if you want to pop a cork with me and my wife, we can let the kids do their thing (Mr. B likes older women).

Joe, I second the idea of you starting your own wine club. And if I can nominate myself for membership, well then - ahem. As for the sexist thing... one the one hand, I would feel dissed too, for being excluded based upon my gender. But on the other, I also believe that women need their time to hang out with other women and do girly things just like the guys need to hang out with guys and do guy things. Although I have to say, I'm very much against those groups forming for the sole purpose of being able to freely bad-mouth the other gender. That's just plain wrong.

As a total wine ignoramus (all I know is that it tastes good and eventually makes me feel good), I'd like to offer the perspective that maybe they were intimidated? Being as you are a total wine pro. Since they are your friends, they must know that about you right? Rather than say "no wine experts allowed" it may have made more sense to just say "no guys allowed" since the wine expert also happened to be the guy in this scenario. I know I never open my mouth about wine when I am in the presence of a connoisseur. I just don't want to look like an idiot. Could be as simple as that.

Hmmm. Menstruation, childbirth, stretch marks, hormones, I mean, I know you're the sweetest bloke, but you're still a bloke. What they maybe should have done, is have a girls night, and then made the wine tasting for everybody. And you are still the man. :D

Aww, Joe...I know it stinks to be excluded, but here's the deal. You really, really, REALLY don't want to be there. REALLY.

As dumb as it is, those women probably just want to be able to talk about goofy girl stuff in the company of other women. Especially since they'll be drinking. It's not you, and do you really want to be there when they drunkenly spill their guts about things you'd rather not hear? Once you take the red pill there's no erasing it from your memory LOL!

I like the comment/suggestion to have a co-ed wine tasting and leave the ladies night as just that. Otherwise, make like Spiccoli and get your own cool rules.

BTW, I'd totally invite you. Don't be sad.

Haha, I totally agree with the gals above who said they want to talk about guys - you probably included. Don't be surprised if you hear shrieks of "DILF" coming from that home. :D

You should find it flattering!

PS. I hope that was acceptable language to Joeprah.com

Hahahahaha "DILF" I don't think I've ever heard that before. It even looks funny. But, so does milf.

ANYWAYS, if I had a wine club, you'd so be invited. Except, I've only had cheap wine and didn't really care for that. But, you get the picture. You should build a club way cooler than theirs. It's only right.

I don't think they were dissing you...I just think they wanted to do stupid girl bonding stuff together.

Are you really upset about a bunch of girls!?! Dude. Go to the gym. Start pumping some iron. GIVE'em something to talk about. And I'll tell you exactly what they're going to talk about:

Husbands don't do enough around the house.
Desperate Housewives of New York.
Why Rebecca doesn't want to have sex.
Who's relationship is on the rocks and why.
ADHD.
Why Carly got voted off American Idol when clearly it was Brooke's turn to go.
How to lose weight.
Who is fat.
Who couldn't come to the girls night and why she's a bitch.
Shopping.
and probably this post.

Done and done. You don't need them. But I will agree, it's never fun to be left out. At least it's just because you're a man. I AM a girl...and I didn't get invited either. Bitches.

Seriously J... the Ladies want to get a little wine drunk and talk about the Guys.. hard to do when one of ya is in the room and actually wants to talk about wine. Calling it a wine club is just a ruse, a pseudonym for Rant Night. Just saying.... :p

Dude, they're afraid of drinking too much wine and then being entranced by your awesomeness. You're a DILF after all. (Thanks Huckdoll, I'm using that one!)

Love the score sheet. I wouldn't drink any wine that smells like ammonia, sorry. That's about where the scoring would stop.

:? Is that a wine or whine club? It sounds like to me that that this exclusive chick club needs to whine while sipping wine without the need of feeling like they need to get cleaned up first because HE will be there. It's a chick thing dude! Diss the whine Joe!

And I'd let you in my club. But I don't drink so... Um. Uh...

I'm like BusyDad - wine idiot; however, my friends and I do allow wives who want to come to attend our Fantasy Football and Baseball drafts, so I think that they should have let you come to the wine party.

Dude, I'm with Christine from Serenity How? You don't want to be there! Now I'm not a wine person, but if it was say, a Dorito Tasting Club....there'd be a problem.

I gotta agree with Big Bad - Doritos freaking rule.

Yeah, the WonderWife doesn't drink wine because she breast feeds, hence I had promised her beforehand that I would until she could.

Then she had to go and get preganant. Sigh. I am never gonna get to drink again.

Any club that doesn't want you is probably a club you don't want to join. Frankly, any club that doesn't want you is probably a club I don't want to join, either.

Let me know when the invites go out for the Diggity Wine Club. I'm there.

I can make my own club, and it will be the bomb diggity

Haha, I love the break-down of all things important, but I especially love your sweet bangin' slang.

Keep breakin' down barriers, brother.

The Wine Club sounds kind of... cliche. Own it Joeprah. Start a club where only hotties are allowed. Keep in mind that "hott" doesn't necessarily mean looks.

i.e., LL Cool J isn't so hott right now, but DANG, fanny packs are!
Okay, maybe not, but you know. You get it.

The Hott Wine Nation
Hott Wine & Dine: No Lames Allowed
The Hott Wine Sessions

Yeah, I need to be in bed. ASAP.
