Stay at Home Dads: Do They Do Hair? | Print |  E-mail

Stay at home dads are a curious phenomenon.  A lot of people really don't have any idea what to make of them.  Do they just watch the kids during the week in addition to rocking out the lawn (mowing) and taking out the trash. Are they kept men?  Are they lazy?  I can only, for certain, speak for myself and what have become my traditional responsibilities.  I do the trash and lawn, but I also cook, clean, and take care of the kids.  Basically, a stay at home mom plus heavy lifting and boxer shorts.  When I say "take care of the kids" for me that means three little girls.  I grew up in a household that was the opposite of the one my girls are growing up in.  I had no experience with girls.  My girls require clothing (so much laundry) and to be primped.  Admittedly, in the beginning I had no idea how to primp them, but in time you learn.  The most important part of being a stay at home dad, in my opinion, is to be able to thrive in new experiences.  From playgroups to doing girls hair, stay at home dads are thrust into a new arena.  You know that old Nike motto, "Just Do It," that pretty much sums it up. Anyways, I have put together a video that demonstrates one of the new things I have learned being a stay at home dad (it is old hat to me now...).  I also give verbal shout outs to some blogging buddies in the video as well.

In the video I give shout outs to the following bloggers:

PG

XBox

Grimm

Piper

Busy Dad

Jared

Terence

Prin

Any dads out there do girls hair?  Do you moms let your husbands anywhere near your kids hair?

Did you study Cosmotology in Vo-Tech? Way uneven Joeps! ;)

Your sweet babygirl's scalp has been toughened up well... I remember my Mom pulling and steering my head the same way you did hers... she would say 'pull away while I braid, I need the resistance.' Yeah, she was hardcore.

I'm so happy I have boys! Hair is a non issue.

Thanks for the shout out, you know I loved it!!

Way to go little one, she stayed still for what, six minutes. Well done.

I can do the rudimentary stuff, I do a pretty good simple "pebbles flintstone" for my babygirl, but I don't have the patience for much more. My older daughter decided she wanted slightly shorter hair a few months ago, so all I need to do for her is brushing.

Good stuff. I thought for sure you had forgotten my question.

Yes, but can he do braids? I know I have a hard time with them, but I've got no problems with the standard ponytail fare. Way to go Joe, keep on with your bad self! BTW, the videos are awesome. I'd suggest a tutorial series in the same tone as this one.

That's great!

My husband doesn't fix the girls' hair but he does comb it after their baths. Then I do the ponytails, topsy tails, whatever.

My kids' favorite ways to get their hair done is in front of the TV (natch) or the mirror (they're girls.) Then they're putty in my hands LOL!

Good job on the hair - I'm impressed!

Aw. You're the sweetest. :)

You left out the tip about clamping her in in the beginning with your dad thighs, aka immobilizers. :D

My dad did my hair, of course. Braids and all. :)

I'm so posting this on my blog. The shout out was just too flattering to not brag about it.

Joe - I used to do my daughters' hair long ago when they were little. I had to teach myself quite a bit. Took me quite a while to figure out where to part hair in order to make a decent set of pigtails. I swear, there ought to be a manual.

Bout the closest thing to doing hair I do, is for me taking my son to our Sports Clips so we can watch some hi def sports as he gets a no. 4 buzz. :grin I did go to a hair class at the last AHD conference in KC, until I realized I was in the wrong place and opted out! It did have good attendance though.

whoa - impressive! on top of that, multitasking: 1) talking, 2) videotaping; and 3) actually styling. kudos! nevermind it was crooked. ;)

i'd like to say that with nick air is a non-issue. but noooooo. the hair thing just ain't for the girls. then again - all the girls/women LOVE his hair. they've braided it, pigtailed it, straightened, washed, dried. he's got his own styling posse.

I was impressed with your work, that is until you went for the third pony tail. You should have left well enough alone! That poor baby would have been made fun of by her friends :cry and we wouldn't want that!

She was sooo good. And I was pretty impressed. Mr B does do hair sometimes, but I tend to laugh at the results. Bad Jo. I promise I will try harder. :D

That was totally awesome! (and I happen to enjoy crooked pigtails more than perfect ones: shows character)

Fixing hair was one of the things I would have looked forward to the most, had I given birth to a girl or two.

Unfortunately, my sons won't let me French Braid their hair...

J/K!

Actually, I buzz their hair to 1/4" so they don't even need a comb.

great video!

(BTW: contest at my blog this week!)

Nicely done Dad! The hubs didn't work on the girl's hair, but he could give the boy a mean buzz cut. Whirrrrr! :)

:zzz You are possibly one of the sweetest daddies ever. I loved watching this vid you posted. Very impressive knowledge on keeping your daughter occupied while using the skill to get her hair done.

I remember my mom holding her knees tight around me when I was little because I used to run away. She literally had to hold me in with her thighs. I was her thigh master!

Man does that bring back memories of doing my daughter's hair. She used to always come to me to do it because "daddy makes the pony tails tight!" I'm looking forward to doing this stuff again with my next one on the way (she's due in June). Very nice! -Jeremy @ Discovering Dad

Hi, I saw you on Piper's blog. That was hysterical!
To answer your question about do wives let their husbands do the kid's hair?...I would have let him (we have 2 boys) but the boys would NOT!:)
I cut my boys hair until they reached the age of 10, then I was promptly let go due to something to do with "being embarrassing, Mom" syndrome.:)
Funny Post!
Amy:)

Great video man. My girls would never let me get away with rubber bands--pulls too much hair when you take them out. The challenging one is the ballet bun. I've got that one down to a science. My wife won't even try it. In fact, my wife has me braid her hair.

And I agree with an earlier comment--that's the biggest brush I've ever seen!

Peace.

Ok, time to make me a little girl because:
1) yours is too cute
2) it looks like they can stay still for much longer then a boy
3) I have some mad ponytailing skillz now that will just go to waste

I love the keep them focused/distracted concept. Who knew they could be synonyms? And of course, thank you for the awesome shout out!

Thanks man for the shout-out! It's been hectic these last few weeks with the baby coming soon, so I am trying to get caught up.

The wonderwife tends to keep all sharp objects away from me and is SUPREMELY cautious when it comes to out little ones hair. I doubt I could get close to putting pigtails in without some sort of alarms going off.
