Our Recent Trip to D.C.: Messin' with Photoshop | Print |  E-mail
Written by Joeprah

So, our family, decided to take a trip to Washington D.C. to check out the natural history museum and the national art gallery.  How did we decide those two?  We did what any self respecting family that loves the democratic system does--we voted.  Our littlest one wanted to see rocket ships (space museum) and the oldest two wanted to see art, and they all wanted to see dinosaurs.  What were the highlights? Our daughters all agreed that riding the metro (D.C.'s subway system) was by far the highlight (you know, like when you get your kids a really special gift and they play with box all day), after that the iMax on dinosaurs ranked second and finally the actual dinosaurs came in third.

We recorded the trip on both our digital camera and digital camcorder. The below pictures are clickable (remember that bosssanders ) and I would like to get everyones take on them.  I used three separate adjustment layers to create the effect that you see.  I am sure there are easier ways, but I basically "colorized" each photo then, using another hue saturation layer, I got all jiggy wit the color and finally I added a last layer that was close to the original and saturated and desaturated parts of the photos to make my beautiful daughters stand out in a crowd.

So, my first attempt at really trying to implement something fancy using photoshop, personally I think it looks P-H-A-T, but that's just because my girls are so dang cute.  Anyways, I managed to take some other photos that were just more fun:

Happy Dinosaur
Triceratops and my Wife

Just some good clean fun with team Joeprah in Washington DC. It was a ton of walking and by the time we got home we all needed to turn in early but it was totally worth it.

Besides the fact that your family is beautiful, I really am impressed with the Photoshop techniques. I'm still at the learning to "crop, text and fill layer" stage. Pretty Spiffy!

:p Before I was married I dated a guy with a 4 yr old named Anna. She was so excited to see the dinosaurs at the natural history museum. We had a fun day and when we got back to my grandmothers, she asked Anna if she had fun seeing the dinosaurs. Anna replied "They were all dead!" Guess she was expecting Jurasic Park. Too funny!

Too cute! I'm lovin' the red streaks you put in your little one's hair, although it's hard to look punk when you're smiling like an angel.

Good preventative measure, I think. When she's a teen you can pull out the pic and say you already did that. A preemptive streak, maybe?

Looks like you are the photoshop king! I especially like the "I really need to take a pee" effect you photoshoped onto your daughter in picture 2.

Your kids. Too freakin cute. That T-rex. Poor guy. What an undignified way to live out your days. You were king of all living things and now museum goers that you could eat like popcorn make funny poses next to you.

Nice touch with the tag over your wife. Quick question--does that work for you or is she totally onto you?

The pictures look great! I love that effect--a friend of mine had her wedding photos done like that, and it was breathtaking.

Looks like fun in D.C.--me being the nerd I am, I would so dig a trip! I'd have to take my parents though--can't trust the 'Roo near ANY pottery; she thinks it's teatime otherwise. We'd need a 'Roowrangler and a Branwrangler to prevent mishaps at the Smithsonian.

Being completely unfamiliar with Photoshop, I have no idea what you said, but it looks good. Your daughters do stand out from the crowd, and they look great. Sounds like our last trip to Colorado. The boys described it as: "We got to take a car, and then a bus, and then a plane, and then a train, and then another plane, and then another bus, and then another car." And that was just to get to Colorado.
